Dogs, like all mammals, have a natural odor. The natural smell of dogs can be unpleasant for dog owners especially when dogs are kept inside the house, as some people are not accustomed to the natural odor of non-human species living close to them. Dogs can also develop unusual odors as a result of skin diseases or other disorders or may be contaminated with odors from other sources in their environment.

All natural dogs smell most prominent by the ears, and from paw bearings. Dogs naturally produce secretions, whose function is to produce a scent that allows for species and the introduction of individual animals by other dogs and for use in marking territories. A small amount of this material is stored when the dog defecates. Large numbers can be extruded when the dog is frightened. It is estimated that this secretion leaves a signal to other dogs allowing them to recognize the source of individual manure deposits. This odor is also a possibility of the signal being exemplified when strange dogs investigate each other by sniffing the anal area. Dog rectal glands can become swollen and can not flow naturally, sometimes requiring visits to a veterinarian or nurse to express the fluid that is formed.
