monoski is a single width ski used for skiing in snow. The same boots, bindings, and poles are used as in alpine skiing. Unlike in snowboarding, both feet are facing forward, rather than sideways toward the journey. Similar equipment including skwal and whiteboards, with legs in tandem formation (one ahead of the other).
Monoskiing was discovered in the late 1950s by Dennis Phillips in Hyak, Washington using a water-ski trap and a bear trap. Surfer Mike Doyle promoted monoski in the early 1970s, after which the relative popularity of monoskiing gradually increased, but interest eventually diminished in favor of snowboarding.
Recently the popularity of monoski has increased, especially in France and in the United States largely due to technological advances in ski design. Like alpine skis, this carving shape of the coil means easier turns and as a result skiers and even snowboarders find the transition to monoskis less daunting.

Monoskiing has benefits for the participants. If the previous skier severely injures himself from the waist down, most will stop skiing; but with the lower body monoskiing it can work as a unit.
