It is based on a book with the same name written by the Bavarian novelist Josef Martin Bauer. Plot

Clemens Forell was a German soldier captured by the Soviets in 1945.

Forell was sentenced to 25 years of forced labor for "crime against partisan" and sent as part of a large group of detainees to a remote labor camp northeast of the Soviet Union. After a very large cross-country train trip with hunger, and long cross-country travel by foot into the dreary desert, they arrived at the gulag. This was done by a cruel commander, Lt Kamenev. After a one-time failure, Forell finally escaped with the help of a camp doctor, â € <â €

During winter, he wanders across northern Siberia, until he meets Anastas and Semyon, two gold miners. Despite initially suspecting him, Forell eventually joins them. After Semyon falls into the river and Forell rescues him, Semyon kills Anastas when he suspects him of stealing his gold. Semyon and Forell then continue their journey. When Semyon can no longer continue, Forell offers to bring her backpack to her, but Semyon is suspicious of throwing her onto the slope, thinking she will also try to steal her gold. Overrun by wolves, Forell is rescued by nomadic Chukchi herders, one of whom, named Irina, falls in love with him.

After he managed to recover, Chukchi learned that the Soviets were looking for Forell. What irritates Irina, Forell goes, with the dog Chukchi is given for friendship. When he does logging operations, Forell is sent on a train with a charge as a brakeman. Betrayed, he was almost captured by the Soviets, led by Kamenev. Although Forell manages to escape, his dog is shot and killed when he attacks and makes Kamenev suffer, leaving him permanently wounded.

Over the next year, Forell goes to Central Asia. A Polish Jewish man helped him obtain a passport despite the fact that Forell was German, and Forell made his way to the Iranian border. As he walks toward freedom, he sees Kamenev walking towards him from the Iranian side. Fear, Forell's views on Kamenev and the dispute arose. However, Kamenev stepped aside and let Forell pass, stating that "victory is mine". After being on the Iranian side, Forell is believed to be a Soviet spy and captive. His uncle who worked in Ankara, Turkey, however, was brought in to identify himself, and Forell was released.

Arriving in Germany on Christmas Day, Forell saw his family go to church. He then arrives at the church, where he reunites with his family.

Error

In the Forell meeting scene with the Iranian police chief in the last office, there were a number of discrepancies between what was shown and the situation prevailing in Iran before the 1979 revolution. The police chief was shown bearded and dressed in an olive green uniform, while the face of Iranian military personnel was formerly shaved clean and uniform the police were dark blue at the time. In addition, a picture of Dome of the Rock was hung on the wall, while at that time the Iranian regime was not a Palestinian supporter. Furthermore, when the king of Iran (Shah) was Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, while the paintings that were on the wall in the office and displayed vaguely, appeared to show his father the previous king Reza Shah Pahlavi.
