Metatarsalgia , metatarsal pain literally and colloquially known as bruises , is any painful foot condition affecting the metatarsal region of the foot. This is a common problem that can affect joints and metatarsal bones.
Metatarsalgia is most often localized to the first metatarsal head - the foot ball just behind the big toe. There are two small sesamoid bones under the first metatarsal head. The next common place of metatarsal headache is below the second metatarsal. This can be due to too short the first metatarsal bone or "first-light hypermobility" - the metatarsal bone and the medial spine behind it - both produce excess pressure transmitted into the second metatarsal head.
