Plot
In DreamLand, Little E. builds control towers and other dream transport machines, so he can start working while also dreaming of being a dream carrier. He came with a birthday cart, which consisted of a locomotive named "Red E. # 35" and a cart containing a female clown named "Beverly", a toy soldier named "Major", a flying plane named "Ace", a ballerina doll named "Jillian", two giraffe dolls named "Lou and Bud" and a sock monkey named "Hudson". After finding Caboose for it, Little E. tries to follow him into the real world, but he is stopped by the Tower. Little E. then tried to pull some boxcars into Big L., but he eventually caused traffic to another engine with the Tower reminding him that he should have pulled one carriage at a time because of its small size. Little E. got a little help from Rusty L., who is an old and wise machine.
In the real world, a boy named Richard shows his friend Marcus, his grandfather watch. Two oppressors named Scott and Stretch threw snowballs at Richard, which made him slip and hand the watch over to them. He worried that his father would be disappointed because he lost his watch. Marcus tried to help him, but Richard did not want any help from him. Richard decided to take a walk in the park, but traced some railroads he had never seen before and found a nearby train. He drove one of his cars to shelter from the cold, unaware that it was pulled by Rusty (who slept at work again) and suddenly woke him up. He immediately returns to DreamLand (with the tracks appearing in front and disappearing behind him) with Richard inside. As it passes through the tunnel to the DreamLand, the tunnel collapses, trapping Richard and the train at DreamLand while the intersection becomes insane. After Rusty tells the others what happened, Richard climbs out and is confused and scared by the train that speaks. The tower realizes that Richard's presence in DreamLand has damaged the dream-reality continuum and can only be corrected if Richard is returned to the real world. He sent some machines to dig the tunnel and was forced to lower Rusty into a trace eraser (where he accepted the consequences), much to Little E's suspicion. He then offered to take Richard home to the rumored path leading to the mountain. The Tower, looking for ways to occupy Little E. and Richard while the other trains tried to do the important job of cleaning the tunnel, agreed, sent them both on their way while also promising to give Rusty his work back afterwards and even toss him a Ticker-Tape Parade. While searching for the tracks, they find themselves chased by the Evening Express, which can not slow down to avoid hitting them. Richard, who suddenly believed that he was dreaming, tried to fly but eventually fell on the Evening Express. He made it back to Little E. but they were driven off the track by Evening Express. After passing through the hills, they made it back to the track. They suddenly found a birthday train, which had slipped when the tunnel collapsed. E. Small decided to bring the train into the real world and try to get information from other machines about the old tracks, but they did not believe that the track existed. Little E., Richard, and his toys decided to look for his own footprint.
E. Small managed to find tracks that lead to the mountain. Along the way, they find an old bridge that partially collapsed while trying to cross it. Richard nearby fell but was rescued by Little E. and Ace. They used an old cargo hook post as an emergency rail for a bridge to cross. Later, they entered a dark area on the mountain and as they climbed the hill Little E. ran out of water because of a leak in the water tank, causing the train to roll back until Richard managed to stop it by applying Little E. brakes. The black machine appears and offers to bring them back to the real world for her. He agrees but he suddenly reveals himself as a Nightmare Train, a villain, a nightmare, a locomotive that can make nightmares and plans to use Richard as a means of sending nightmares to the real world and going after the dereliction of Little E. and the train birthday. In the Train of Nightmares, Richard is confronted by the illusion of the intruders but the others encourage him to defend them. Ace escapes and goes to help Little E. After refilling his tank using water from the nearest water tower, he and Caboose find themselves still unable to get back on track. Little E. saw another stretch of track below and down the cliff, successfully landed back on the tracks. Meanwhile, Richard escapes and falls off the train after a failed attempt to close the car. Little E. found it and they quickly chased the Nightmare Train. While confronting him, the toys slip out while Little E., Richard, and Ace trick him to speed up the side lanes at a rapid pace. Major then uses his badge to clog the leak in Little E. tank (as well as confess his feelings to Jillian) and they continue their journey up the mountain. They finally reach the top and travel through the portals that direct them to the real world, where no time passes at all.
