Signs and Symptoms

Characteristics may vary according to pustular psoriasis subtype. For example, it can be localized, generally into the hands and feet (local pustular psoriasis), or generalized by extensive patches that occur randomly on any part of the body (common pustular psoriasis). However, all forms of pustular psoriasis share the similarity of the presence of red skin and soft skin patches that are covered with pustules.

Pustular psoriasis can be localized, generally to the hands and feet (palmoplantar pustulosis), or generalized by widespread patches that occur randomly on any part of the body. Acrodermatitis continua is a form of local psoriasis limited to fingers and toes that can spread to the hands and feet. Palmaris et plantary pustulosis is another form of local pustular psoriasis similar to that of continua acrodermatitis with pustules that erupt from red, tender, scaly skin found in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is also known as (von Zumbusch) acute general pustular psoriasis in acute cases, and as a herpetiformis impetigo during pregnancy. GPP is a rare and severe form of psoriasis that may require hospitalization. This form of psoriasis is characterized by the acute onset of many pustules on soft red skin. These skin eruptions are often accompanied by fever, muscle aches, nausea, and an increase in the number of white blood cells. Pustular annular psoriasis (APP), a rare form of GPP, is the most common type seen during childhood. APP tends to occur in women more often than in men, and is usually less severe than other common pustular psoriasis forms such as impetigo herpetiformis. This form of psoriasis is characterized by ring-shaped plaques with pustules around the edges and yellow crusts. APP most often affects the torso, neck, arms, and legs.
