The acre-foot is a commonly used volume unit in the United States in reference to large-scale water resources, such as reservoirs, drains, canals, drainage flow capacity, irrigation water, and river flows.

Definition

As the name suggests, acre-foot is defined as the volume of one hectare surface area to a depth of one foot.

Since acre is defined as a chain by furlong (ie 66 °, ft Æ' 660 f, ft or 20.12 mÃÆ'â € "201.17 m), the acre-foot is 43,560 cubic feet (1,233 m ³ ).

There are two definitions of acre-foot (differing from 0.0006%), depending on whether the "foot" used is "international foot" or "US survey foot".

As a rule of thumb in US water management, an acre-foot is taken as planned water use from suburban family households, every year. In some areas of the Southwest desert, where water conservation is followed and often enforced, an ordinary family uses only about 0.25 acre-feet of water per year. One acre-foot per year is about 893 gallons (3.38 m ³ ) per day.

Acre-foot (or more specifically the acre-foot time-level unit ) has been used historically in the US in many water management agreements, such as the Colorado River Compact, which divides 15 million acres-feet (MAF ) per year (586 m ³ /s) among the seven western US states.

The water reservoir capacity in the US is generally given in thousands of acre-feet , abbreviated TAF .

Elsewhere in the world, where metric systems are commonly used, water volumes can be expressed in cubic meters (as in cubic meter/second flow rate, or " cumecs ") or, for water volume usage, storage or irrigation, in kiloliters (kL = 1 cubic meter), megalithres (ML = 1,000 cubic meters), or gigalitres (GL = 1,000,000 cubic meters). One acre-foot is roughly equivalent to 1,233 megalithres and 1,233 kiloliters. The large body of water can be measured in cubic kilometers (1,000,000,000 m ³ , or 1000GL), with 1000 TAF or 1 million acre-feet approximately equivalent to 1,233 km ³ .
