Cold feet are phrases that refer to someone who does not take action, especially those who need long-term commitment, because of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Origin and history

The origin of the term itself is mostly attributed to American author Stephen Crane, who added the phrase, in 1896, to the second edition of his short novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. Crane wrote, "I know it's like that, they have cold feet." The term is present in "Seed Time and Harvest" by Fritz Reuter published in 1862. Kenneth McKenzie, a former professor of Italian at Princeton University attributes the first use of this phrase to the game of Volpone produced by Ben Jonson in 1605. The true origin and the first use of this phrase is still disputed and has not been confirmed as exemplified above.

General use

Wedding

The use of a common phrase is when people are afraid of marriage commitments and get "cold feet" before the wedding ceremony. This pre-marital or fear doubt can manifest for a variety of reasons and sometimes causes the bride or bride to withdraw from the planned marriage. Original research on the phenomenon of "cold feet" is very limited, but a four-year study conducted by UCLA researchers found a feeling of premarital doubt or uncertainty about an impending marriage linked to future marital problems and a decent predictor of divorce.
