Diabetic dermopathy (also known as "shin spots") is a type of skin lesion commonly seen in people with diabetes mellitus. It is characterized by dull-red papules that develop into skin lesions of smooth, small, rounded, atrophic hyperpigmented skin, usually on the shin. This is the most common of some diabetic skin conditions, which are found in up to 30% of diabetics. Similar lesions can sometimes be found in non-diabetic patients who are usually traumatized or injured in the area; However, more than 4 lesions strongly suggest diabetes.

The cause is unknown but suspected to be associated with diabetic neuropathy and vascular complications; because lesions are more common in the shin, some suggest it represents an altered response to injury. This appears to be more common in patients with long-standing diabetes and poor glucose control.
