Dunlop is a tire brand owned by companies around the world. Founded by John Boyd Dunlop pneumatic tire pioneer in Birmingham, England in 1889, it is owned and operated by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In India, this brand is owned by Dunlop India Ltd. The parent company is Ruia Group. In Asia (Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Russia), Africa and Latin America (except Mexico) by Sumitomo Rubber Industries.
In 1985, Dunlop Rubber Company was acquired by BTR plc, and Sumitomo acquired the rights to produce and market Dunlop branded road tires. Sumitomo did not get any Dunlop company. In 1997 Sumitomo obtained approval to use the name Dunlop in the name of his company, and changed the name of his subsidiary in England to Dunlop Tyres Ltd.
In 1999 Sumitomo and Goodyear started a joint venture in which Sumitomo continued to produce all Japanese-made tires under the name of Dunlop, while Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company bought 75% of Sumitomo's European and North American tire business.
The company has extensive manufacturing operations worldwide. With the closure of Washington's plant in 2006, Goodyear Dunlop halted production of major car and truck tires in the UK.
In 2016 it was announced that Sumitomo Rubber Industries will start the second phase of a $ 131 million investment (USD) for the increase and expansion of the Dunlop tire manufacturing plant at Ladysmith, in South Africa.
Until May 2014 Goodyear Dunlop occupies a small part of this site with their main English office. In the UK, the company operates as a sales organization, importing tires from factories around the world, including China, Slovenia and Poland.
The Goodyear Dunlop joint venture is managed from sites in Luxembourg and Brussels, which reports to Goodyear in Akron, Ohio, USA.

Fort Dunlop
Fort Dunlop is a motorsport manufacturing operation located at the corner of the original Dunlop factory in Erdington, Birmingham, which was established in 1891 until May 2014. The factory produces vintage specialty tires, motorcycles and touring, and produces about 300,000 special racing tires per year. On May 30, 2014, the Birmingham plant halted tire production, ending Dunlop's tire production in the UK.
The main Birmingham building has been developed extensively as a residential complex, office and hotel combined, with modern shopping facilities (The Fort Shopping Center), car dealerships and some logistics warehouses. This can be observed between junctions 5 and 6 of M6, on the north side of the highway.
