Description in detail
Marla is a traditional regional unit used in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Marla was standardized under British rule to be equal to a square rod, or 272.25 square feet, 30.25 square meters, or 25.2929 square meters. Thus, it is exactly one 160 acres.
The definition of marla varies between India and Pakistan. In India, the unit is standardized to 25 square meters. Its use in India is declining, with guz, square meters, acres and hectares being the more commonly used units. Bangladesh uses the same marla definition as in India. In most of Pakistan, it is still equal to 30.25 square meters set by the UK, except in Lahore district of Pakistan where it is 25 square meters. The definition of the old English marla is often referred to as the "great marla" in India. One Marla Pakistan equals 9 square karm in Urdu and karoon in Punjabi 9 Sarsahi equals one Marla. And 20 marches in Lahore is the same as a canal, while in Islamabad 16 marlas equals one canal.
