In Greek mythology, Procrustes (???????????? & hl = en Prokroustes ) or "[shaved metal] shaft", also known as Prokoptas or Damastes (????????, "subduer"), is a naughty bastard and a bandit from Attica who strikes people by stretching them or cutting their legs, thus forcing them to adjust the size of the iron bed.
The word "Procrustean" is thus used to describe situations where different lengths or sizes or properties are fitted to an arbitrary standard.

Mythology
In Greek myth, Procrustes was the son of Poseidon with a fortress on Mount Korydallos in Erineus, on the holy path between Athens and Eleusis. There he has a bed, where he invites everyone who passes for the night, and where he starts working on them with his smith hammers, to stretch them to fit. In subsequent reports, if guests prove too high, Procrustes will amputate its strengths; no one ever put the bed properly. Procrustes continued his reign of terror until he was captured by Theseus, traveling to Athens along the holy path, which "puts" Procrustes into his own bed:
He killed Damastes, named Procrustes, by forcing him to make his own body fit his bed, as he usually did with strangers. And he did this by imitating Heracles. Because the hero punishes those who offer violence to him in the way they plan to serve him.
Killing Procrustes was the last adventure of Theseus on his journey from Troezen to Athens.
