Histori
Ralphs Grocery Company was founded in 1873 by George Albert Ralphs. The original store is located at Sixth and Spring Streets in Los Angeles, California. In the 20th century, Ralphs became a grocery pioneer, offering a supermarket with a cashier at a distributed location. The company employs a leading architect in designing his shop, and the former Ralphs Grocery Store store built in 1929 in Westwood Village has been photographed by Ansel Adams, declaring the Historic Cultural Monument, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the 1980s, he created a chain of supermarkets called The Giant , which failed, but the concept came back with a corporate merger with the Food 4 Less discount chain. In 1994, Ralphs was acquired by the Yucaipa Company for $ 1.5 billion. Yucaipa has ABC Markets, Alpha Beta, Boys Markets, and Cala Foods. Soon, all ABC Markets, Alpha Betas, and Children's Markets are branded as Ralphs. At the same time, Food 4 Less is combined with Ralphs. In 1997, Yucaipa sold Ralphs Grocery Company to Fred Meyer, Inc., owner of several chains in the west. Soon, the Ralphs Marketplace store begins to open; these stores are based on Fred Meyer's model but without clothes. At the same time, they also acquired the Hughes Family Markets store chain of Hughes Family Markets . In October 1998, the holding company, Fred Meyer, joined The Kroger Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 1999, Ralphs bought about 30 Albertsons and Lucky stores, mostly in northern California. The shops were divested as a result of the merger of Albertsons and American Stores. Ralphs operated the store until January 2006, when they announced that all but one Ralph in northern California would be closed. In August 2006, one Ralph remaining in northern California was given a 60-day closing notice. Also, in August 2006, Ralphs completed a plan to sell Eleven (out of thirteen remaining) Cala-Bell Stores to Harley DeLano, who previously managed the chain. Northern California Ralphs expansion did not go as planned.
On July 20, 2007, Ralphs opened a store of 50,000 square feet (4,600m 2 ) at 9th and Hope Street in the neighborhood of South Park in downtown Los Angeles. This is the first fully-run self-service center in 50 years. In 1950, Ralphs closed stores on 7th Street and Figueroa Street.
Today, Ralphs competes with Albertsons, Vons (a division of Albertsons Companies LLC), and Stater Bros.. The slogan is "Good Food, Real Low Price!" Ralphs is the current market leader in Southern California.

strike 2003-2004
Ralphs Grocery Company has a contract with United Food and Commercial Workers, the largest wholesale union in the United States. In late 2003 and early 2004, Ralphs locked down his UFCW members in sympathy with a Vons competitor (owned by Safeway Inc.) in Southern California, after UFCW had announced a strike against Vons. Problems in contract negotiations include health benefits and wage structures, which are needed by supermarkets to reduce costs and stay competitive in the face of the emergence of discount chains such as Walmart. In March 2004, the strike ended with a settlement that was considered a win for the shopping chain - new employees would be on a much lower salary scale than the existing workers and receive less than generous health benefits.
On October 16, 2006, Ralphs agreed to pay $ 70 million to settle allegations of a crime that illegally hired back locked employees using false names and Social Security numbers during the strike. Qualified UFCW members receive $ 50 million from settlement and the remaining is paid a fine to the federal government.
