square miles (abbreviated sqÃ, mi and sometimes miÃ,ò ) are the units of imperial and US sizes for the same area as the rectangular area with side length of a mile law. It should not be confused with square miles , which refers to the square region with each side having a specified length. For example, 20 square miles (20 à 20 miles) has an area equal to 400 square miles; rectangle 10 ÃÆ'â ⬠"40 miles also has an area of ââ400 square miles, but the breadth is not 20 square miles.

When applied to a portion of the earth's surface, "square miles" is an informal synonym for the part.
Rome derives measurements from marching. Five feet equals one step (which is an appropriate double step). 1,000 steps measured by Roman miles, which is somewhat smaller than the English law mil. The Roman system was adopted, with local variations, across Europe as the Roman Empire spread.
The total population in square miles is obtained by dividing the total population by the number of square miles of land in the designated geographical area. The population per square kilometer is decreased by multiplying the population per square mile by 0.3861.
Measurements of land area were initially recorded as whole square meters. Square meters converted into square kilometers by dividing by 1,000,000; square kilometers converted into square miles by dividing it by 2.58999; square meter converted into square miles by dividing it by 2,589,988.
