Ringkasan plot
A peasant girl named Karen was adopted by a rich old lady after her mother's death and grew in vain and spoiled. Before being adopted, Karen had a pair of rough red boots; now she has her adoptive mother buy her a pair of red shoes that is suitable for a princess. Karen was so enamored with her new shoes that she wore them to church, but the old lady reprimanded her: it was so inappropriate and she only had to wear black shoes in the church from now on. But next Sunday, Karen can not help but put on red shoes again. When he will enter the church, he meets a mysterious old warrior with a red beard. "Oh, what beautiful shoes to dance," said the soldier. "Never go when you dance," she tells her shoes, and she taps her soles with her hands. After the church, Karen could not resist taking a few dance steps, and off she went, as if the shoes were controlling her, but she finally managed to let her go. One day, after her adoptive mother fell ill, Karen left her alone and went to a ball in town with her red shoes. He started dancing, but this time the shoes will not come off. They continue to dance, night and day, rain or shine, through fields and meadows, and through thorns and grass that tears off Karen's feet. She can not even attend the funeral of her adoptive mother. An angel appeared to him, carrying a sword, and cursed him for dancing even after he died, as a warning to slaughter children everywhere. Karen begged forgiveness but red shoes took her away before she heard the angel's answer. Karen found the executioner and asked her to decapitate her foot. He did it but the boots continued to dance, even with amputated Karen legs in it. The executioner gave him a pair of wooden legs and crutches, and taught him the psalm of the villain (probably, Psalm 50/51 Miserere). Thinking that she had suffered enough for red shoes, Karen decided to go to church so that people could see her. But his amputated legs, still in red shoes, danced in front of him, blocking the way. The following week he tried again, thinking he was at least as good as the others in the church, but again the red dancing shoes were blocking his path. Karen got a job as a housekeeper, but on Sunday she did not dare go to church. Instead, he sits alone at home and prays to God for help. The angel reappeared, now carrying a spray of roses, and gave Karen the compassion she requested: her heart became so full of sunshine, peace, and exploding joy. His soul flies in the sun to Heaven, where no one calls red shoes.

Andersen named his antagonist Karen after her stepbrother, Karen Marie Andersen. The origin of the story is based on the Andersen incident witnessed as a child. Her father, who is a shoemaker, was sent a piece of red silk by a rich lady to make a pair of dancing sandals for her daughter. Using some red skin along with silk, she carefully creates a pair of shoes just for the rich customer to tell him that they are horrible. He said he did nothing but damage his silk. Where his father replied, "Well then, I can also damage my skin," and he cut the shoe in front of him.
