History and construction

In 1998, the Dallas Mavericks, then owned by H. Ross Perot, Jr., and Dallas Stars indicated their desire for a new facility to replace the old Reunion Arena. Dallas taxpayers approve new hotel taxes and rental car taxes to pay for new facilities to cover part of the funding, with two lucrative teams, Mavericks and Stars, taking on the remaining costs, including cost swelling. The new arena will be built on the northern Woodall Rodgers Freeway near Interstate 35E at the site of the old power plant.

On March 18, 1999, American Airlines announced that it would get the naming rights for the $ 195 million arena. American Airlines is headquartered in Fort Worth and is based at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The first event happened the next day with Eagles concert. The following night, the arena hosted the final show of Flames of Flames tour of Michael Flatley. The first sporting event took place on August 19, 2001, with Dallas Sidekicks from World Indoor Soccer League taking on San Diego Sockers.

Design

The main design work was undertaken by David M. Schwarz Architectural Services of Washington D.C. American Airlines Center is designed to be the heart of a new, commercial urban area designed to revive the city of Dallas called Victory Park. The facility itself has a conservative traditional design with façade of sweeping stones and smooth arches, and has been honored with numerous awards (below). The interior includes a retractable seat, public art and a state of the art arena. Because of its appearance as Quonset hut roofs and the fact that American Airlines holds the naming rights of some fans has come to call it "The Hangar".

On the south side of AT & amp; T Plaza (also called Victory Plaza) serves as the main entrance to the facility, designed by the artist Athena Tacha in 2000. The square provides an open space with a fountain flanked by retail and office buildings. With multiple high-definition video displays from Daktronics mounted on the side of the arena and office buildings, the plaza is often used for outdoor events and movie shows.
