Detoxification or detoxication ( detox in short) is the physiological removal of physiological substances or drugs from living organisms, including the human body, which is primarily done by the liver. In addition, this may refer to the withdrawal period as long as the organism returns to homeostasis after long-term use of the addictive substance. In the medical world, detoxification can be achieved by decontamination of toxic consumption and use of antidote and techniques such as dialysis and (in some cases) chelation therapy.
Many alternative medicine practitioners promote different types of detoxification such as detoxification diet. Scientists have described this as a "waste of time and money". Sense About Science, a UK-based charity, determined that most of the "detox" claims of such diets do not have supporting evidence.

Alcohol detoxification is the process by which the heavy drinker system is brought back to normal after being habituated to drink alcohol in the body continuously for a period of substance abuse. Serious alcohol addiction leads to a decrease in GABA neurotransmitter receptors. A sudden withdrawal from long-term alcoholism without medical management can lead to severe and potentially fatal health problems. Detox Alcohol is not a treatment for alcoholism. After detoxification, other treatments should be made to address the underlying addictions that lead to alcohol use.
Drug detoxification
Doctors use drug detoxification to reduce or alleviate withdrawal symptoms while assisting addicted individuals to adjust to life without the use of drugs; drug detoxification does not aim to treat addiction but is the first step in long-term treatment. Detoxification can be achieved without drugs or may use the drug as a treatment aspect. Often drug detoxification and treatment will occur in community programs that last for several months and take place in residential neighborhoods rather than in medical centers.
Drug detoxification varies depending on the location of the treatment, but most detox centers provide care to avoid physical withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and from other drugs. Most also include counseling and therapy during detox to help with the withdrawal consequences.
Metabolic detox
Animal metabolism can produce harmful substances which can then make less toxic by reduction, oxidation (collectively known as redox reactions), conjugation and excretion of molecules from cells or tissues. This is called xenobiotic metabolism. Enzymes that are important in detoxification metabolism include cytochrome oxidase P450, UDP-glucuronosyltransferases, and glutathione S -transferases. These processes are particularly well studied as part of drug metabolism, as they affect the pharmacokinetics of drugs in the body.
Alternative medicine
Certain approaches in alternative medicine claims to remove "toxins" from the body through herbal, electro or electromagnetic treatments. These toxins are undefined and have no scientific basis, so the validity of these techniques can be questioned. There is little evidence for toxic accumulation in this case, because the liver and kidneys automatically detoxify and remove many toxic substances including metabolic wastes. Under this theory if toxins are released too quickly without being safely eliminated (such as when metabolizing fats that store toxins) they can damage the body and cause malaise. Therapies include contrasting showers, foot detox pads, oil pulling, Gerson therapy, snake stones, body cleansing, Rendown Purification Scientology, fasting water, and metabolic therapy.
