Hiking boots (walking) are shoes specially designed to protect the feet and ankles during outdoor walks such as hiking. They are one of the most important items of climbing equipment, because their quality and durability can determine the pedestrian ability to walk away without injury. Hiking boots are built to give you the comfort to walk far above rough terrain. Boots that protect the feet and heels of the foot are recommended. The hiking boots provide ankle support and are pretty stiff. A less popular alternative is to use a lightweight solo trainer. Footwear should not be too loose or too tight, to help prevent abrasions and aching feet. Hiking socks that absorb sweat from the feet, provide warmth, and the foot pillows are recommended and deep socks can also help. Most hiking boots are also designed for other outdoor activities such as backpacking, hiking, mountain climbing, and hunting.

There are three types of walking shoes.
- Shoes trail is made for hiking in dry climates, on solid tracks, less rough or rocky. They are suitable for different types of day hikes.
- Pedestrians are for steep climbs and muddy paths. They are used where the lightest boot is most suitable. Trail hikers are also sturdy, taller-cut, and watertight. These boots provide more stability and ankle protection against limbs and protruding rocks than hiking boots.
- Mountain walking or hiking boots are designed for mountain and hill climbing, backpacking, and mountain climbing. Crampons can be attached to them for a better grip on glaciers or deeply dense snow. They are very strong, durable, and have a stiff palm to provide ankle support and protection on difficult rocky paths. Mountain shoes are usually taller and stiffer than hiking boots, providing insulation and support and protection.

- Top - The top of the hiking boots is meant to protect and support the legs with all the snug fit. The top should be water repellant/proof, but allow the feet to breathe to prevent excess moisture from causing blisters and other discomforts.
- Sol - The climbing shoe has a thick, hard sole to provide friction and avoid slipping on any surface. The soles absorb and shake shocks, and provide a cushion for the feet.
- Tongue - The flap covering the upper entrance channel is called the tongue. This is the part that goes under the shoelaces. The tongue ensures that water, dirt and dirt will not go into boots.
- Lining and Paddings - Lining and paddings provide more protection and comfort for the feet.
- Soles/Footbeds - The soles are the bottom of the inside of which the foot rests. A perfectly shaped sole for pedestrian legs will ensure maximum support and balance.
- Shanks - Rigid plastic or metal plates built in soles. Boots are made with full shank, three quarters, or half a length. Longer shank makes the shoes more rigid.
- Scree Collars - Protects the Achilles tendon and ankle from inflammation.
- Crampon Connection - Crampons are worn on boots to provide attraction to snow and ice.
Rubber shoes
Most are made of leather, sometimes with a waterproof breathable coating, such as Gore-Tex. However, these shoes are not worth the rubber boots when it becomes watertight and dry quickly, making it difficult to cross the river while keeping the inside of the shoe dry. Although there are rubber lace shoes designed for hiking purposes, rubber hiking boots are not ideal for wide use because the feet can not breathe and sweat extensively, which can cause foot problems such as abrasions, yeast infections, and foot trenches. This weakness negates any advantages of rubber boots to keep external humidity. However, non-rubber hiking boots are generally quite expensive and require more maintenance. The largest hiking boot is 7.14m long, 2.5m wide, and 4.2m high by Schuh Marke (Germany).
