Histori

On September 23, 1960, Community Research & amp; Development Corporation (later The Rouse Company) opens the door to North Star Mall, a fully enclosed 250,000 square foot (23,000 m 2 ) shopping center located at the intersection of San Pedro Avenue and Loop 13 (now Interstate 410 Connally Loop). The center opens with Wolff and Marx, H-E-B, Walgreens and 50 other stores and is the fifth shopping center developed by CRDC. A time capsule scheduled to open in 1985 will be used to commemorate the opening of the mall.

The mall was expanded in 1963 and the new anchor Frost Bros opened. A two-screen movie theater added to the mall was added in 1964. The mall was extended again in 1969 and Wolff and Marx moved into a new four-story building as part of the expansion and renamed it to Joske. Two-level parking deck with full-service Texaco added to the south of Joske's.

The Rouse Company sold a 62.5% stake in North Star Mall to Rodamco North America in 1974. In 1980 a pair of 40-foot cowboy boots (12 m) - a sculpture by artist Bob "Daddy-O" Wade entitled 'The Giant Justins, 'installed on the front road I-410. Mall promotes the statue, which was made for the Washington Art Project in 1979, as "the world's largest pair of cowboy boots." A major renovation of the mall was completed in 1982, adding new food and music court as well as Foley located on former H-E-B and original Walgreens site.

A new multi-level parking garage and two-story wing were added to the mall in 1985, along with the new anchor of Saks Fifth Avenue. North Star Mall celebrated its 25th anniversary, opened its 1960 capsule time, and dedicated a new one that opened on September 23, 2010. Two multi-level parking garages opened in 1986 and other three-story wings were added to the mall including Marshall Field's new anchor and food new court. Foley's expanded its store to 256,000 square feet (23,800m 2 ) by extending the store a few feet to the north. Joske's was bought in 1987 and renamed Dillard's. Frost Bros was liquidated and closed in 1989. The former Gucci Boutique located there moved to a new two-story store adjacent to Saks Fifth Avenue. In 1992, Mervyns opened in the former location of Frost Bros. Marshall Field's was pulled out of the Texas market in 1997 and the North Star Mall location was bought by and converted into Macy's. Saks Fifth Avenue completed a massive renovation at an existing store and also opened a new grocery store in a rented space from a mall bordering the store.

The Rouse Company sold additional shares in North Star Mall to Rodamco in 2000, leaving Rouse less than 5% ownership of the property. The Rouse Company received back Northstar Mall ownership in 2002 by purchasing property (and several others) from Rodamco North America. The Rouse Company embarked on a multi-year multi-million dollar renovation in 2004. This renovation is the most extensive renovation that the mall has seen in its history. General Growth Properties bought The Rouse Company and became the owner of the mall. The scheduled renovation of the mall was postponed as a result of the transaction.

In 2005, as a result of the Department Store/May Department Store transaction, Macy announced it would close their three-story, 178,000 square foot store (16,500 m 2 ) in North Star in 2006 and 250,000 store rebrand square feet (23,000 m 2 ) Foley as Macy's. In 2006, General Growth Properties purchased the Macy location of the Federation. Official Mall announces that J.C. Penney will open a shop on Macy's/Marshall Field site in the summer of 2007. The multi-million dollar renovation planned since 1999 but stalled because of a change of ownership in 2004 has finally continued. The renovations will include interior and exterior malls, including a ten-foot addition outside the mall that spell "North Star." As part of the Federated/May merger, Macy's closed down and Foley's changed its name to Macy's. Foley's previous location became Macy's San Antonio mainstay shop.

JC Penney opened in 2007 at Macy's former site on August 2nd. In 2008, California-based Mervyns announced on August 13 that it will close three of its stores in San Antonio (including North Star Mall locations) in November 2008. The new Apple Store is open. in 2008. In 2010, Forever 21 moved its existing store to the previous Mervyns location. Also in 2010, North Star Mall celebrated its 50th anniversary and opened its 1985 capsule. The Michael Kors Boutique is scheduled to open at the start of the holiday shopping season.

Additional information

There used to be an underground arcade, called the Court of Music. Added in 1982 near the north door between what is currently J.C. Penney and Saks Fifth Avenue, it's only accessible by escalators. In the early 1980s, arcade tenants included Great Toys for Big Boys, record stores, and music stores. The Oshman Sports Shop Store rented out the entire arcade room in the late 1980s and moved the escalator into the main pedestrian traffic corridor for main access. The Oshman closed in the 1990s when it opened a superstor on the highway (then the Sports Authority, but closed in 2016), and the crypt has been closed.

The parking garage was added in the mid-1980s between Saks and Dillard's refugee cinema mall complex. The Texaco fuel station located in the native underground garage of the mall (on the corner of the Rector and McCullough) was also closed during a 1980s renovation.

The North Star Transit Center, operated by VIA Metropolitan Transit, is located adjacent to the northwest corner of the mall
