A patio heater (also called mushroom or umbrella heater) is a radiant heater for generating heat radiation for outdoor use.

A burner on a pole, burning liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), propane or butane, and directing fire to a hollow metal screen. Heat is emitted from the surface of the screen in a circular pattern around the tool. A reflector above the burner reflects heat that will be lost to the top. This is because the reflective hood is usually silver coated which makes it a poor heat sink but excellent in reflecting back infra-red radiation. This reduces the amount of heat lost by conduction because the silver surface will not absorb infrared light. Chimenea is an alternative to patio heaters for home use, which burn wood instead of gas.

Some of the newer types of terrace heaters are electrically powered radiation heaters that emit infrared energy to nearby surfaces, which in turn heat up the surrounding air.

Other styles of outdoor patio heater include:

  • Wall Mounted Patio Heater: mounted on wall or structure made for safe operation
  • Hanging Patio Heater: printable portable and small foot that is only in electricity
  • Tabletop Patio Heater: ultra portable and suitable for smaller groups or outdoor dining, but using a small propane tank

Patio heaters have become popular with bars and restaurants as they extend days and seasons for their customers to sit outdoors. The increasing popularity of patio heaters has caused concerns over their environmental effects. One patio heater can produce four tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Heated Propane Terraces Heaters

The propane patio heaters are the most popular type because it is portable and easy to find refill locations such as gas stations or department stores. The downside to propane is that you need to buy a separate tank for every heater you have and can be more expensive to operate than electricity or natural gas.

Natural Gas Gas Gas Heaters

Natural gas terrace heaters are great because more homes are equipped with natural gas lines. This makes it very convenient to connect, but more portable than propane. Extension hoses are available, but can be a danger to stumble especially after sunset.

Electric Heat-Powered Heaters

Electric patio heaters are a great choice for easy setup, and have indoor applications as well, for partially enclosed indoor-outdoor spaces. Electric heating is generally generally a bit weaker, therefore it is best for a small group of people.
