RG-58/U is a type of coaxial cable that is often used for low power signals and RF connections. Cable has characteristic impedance either 50 or 52? "RG" was originally a unit indicator for bulk RF cables in the US Composite Type Assembly Type System. There are several versions that include differences in core materials (solid wire or braided) and shielding (70% to 95% coverage).

The outer diameter of RG-58 is about 0.2 inches (5 mm). RG-58 weighs about 0.025 lb/ft (37 g/m), indicating about 25 pF/ft (82 pF/m) capacitance and can tolerate a maximum of 300 V potential (1800 W). The Plain RG-58 cable has a solid conductor center. RG-58A/U has a flexible conductor 7- or 19-center strand.

Most two-way radio communication system, such as marine, CB radio, amateur, police, fire, WLAN antenna, etc., Designed to work with 50Ã? cable.

The RG-58 cable is often used as a generic signal carrier in the laboratory, combined with a common BNC connector on testing and measuring equipment such as an oscilloscope.

RG-58 in RG-58A/U or RG-58C/U version was once used extensively in the "thin" Ethernet (10BASE2), which provides a maximum segment length of 185 meters. However, it is almost completely replaced by twisted pair cables like Cat5, Cat 6, and similar cables in data network applications.

The RG-58 cable can be used for fairly high frequencies. Signal attenuation depends on frequency, e.g. from 10.8 dB per 100 m (3.3 dB per 100 feet) at 50 MHz to 70.5 dB per 100 m (21.5 dB per 100 feet) at 1 GHz.
