MS Ruby Saga is the last cruise ship operated by Saga Cruises. He was built as a marine vessel/yacht combined Vistafjord in 1973 by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders in the United Kingdom for the Norwegian America Line. In 1983 he was sold to Cunard Line, retaining his original name until 1999 when he changed his name to Caronia . In 2004 it was sold to Saga and sailed as Saga Ruby until it was sold in 2014 to be used as a floating hotel and renamed Oasia . This never works. The owner went bankrupt, and in April 2017 he arrived at Alang for throwing away.

Concept and construction

The Vistafjord was ordered by the Norwegian America Line (NAL) of Swan Hunter Shipbuilders, Newcastle, England. It is based on MS 1965 built by Sagafjord company, but with enlarged hull, superstructure deck and better interior design. However, since the cost of building Sagafjord has put its builder, Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranee, out of business, Vistafjord should be built in different shipyards. He was launched on May 15, 1972 and sent to the Norwegian America Line exactly one year later on May 15, 1973. He is the last yacht built in England.

Norwegian American Path

On May 22, 1973 Vistafjord arranged its maiden voyage, a transatlantic crossing from Oslo to New York. In the early 1980s, the ship was famously hired by British car manufacturer Leyland to internally launch Metro Austin to its dealer network in the UK.

Although their vessels are highly valued, the Norwegian America Line is having difficulty making a profit.

Cunard Line

In 1983 Trafalgar House, the owner of the legendary Line Cunard, bought NAL and in October 1983 Vistafjord joined the Cunard fleet along with his sister ship Sagafjord. He retains his original name and gray color of the NAL gray, but receives a Cunard Line funnel and re-enrolls it into the Bahamas. Despite flag changes, he retained the Norwegian commando staff.

During this time both the Vistafjord and Sagafjord are considered to be among the world's most luxurious cruises, sharing the top 5 at Berlitz's Complete Guide for Sailing , along with his sister sending Sagafjord and Royal Viking Line Royal Viking Star , Royal Viking Sky and Royal Viking Sea for several years.

In 1999 a decision was made to rename Vistafjord with the more traditional Cunard Path name. On December 10, 1999 he changed his name to Caronia and re-enlisted in England.

Saga Cruises

He continued service with Cunard until November 2004, when he was sold to Saga Cruises. After a Â£ 17 million reparation in Valletta, Malta, Caronia re-emerged as Saga Ruby in March 2005. In the Saga Cruise Ship fleet, he joined the former fleet of the Norwegian American Fleet his Sagafjord (now called Saga Rose ).

It was reported in 2012 that Saga Cruises will retire Saga Ruby in 2014 and Quest for Adventure will return to the fleet as my Saga Pearl II .

Farewell Voyage with Saga

He sailed his last world voyage in the first months of 2013. But it was marred by technical difficulties that made the ship in Southampton until the end of February, which led to the voyage renamed 'Grand Voyage' visiting South and South Africa.

While on his final voyage he was forced to change his travel plans to a Western Mediterranean cruise that stopped in Tenerife; Almeria, Spain; Valletta, Malta; Messina, Sicily; Naples, Italy; Civitavecchia (for Rome); Livorno (for Florence, Pisa); Monte Carlo; Barcelona, â€‹â€‹Ã¢ â‚¬ <Ã¢ â‚¬ Saga Ruby meets with Saga Sapphire for New Year's Eve fireworks; because of problems with one generator after reaching the Canary Islands. The loss of the generator means that there is not enough power available to run the AC installation. The voyage also returned to Southampton late due to bad weather in Biscay Bay, finally arriving on January 9, 2014, with passengers down on January 10.

Floating Hotel Oasia

In January 2014 he sold for $ 14 million USD to Milenium View Ltd, a private company based in Singapore. The new owners are planning to turn it into a floating hotel in Myanmar. In mid-February 2014 he sailed from Gibraltar as Oasia under the banner of the Bahamas and the management of FleetPro Ocean. In February 2017, it was announced that Oasia was sold for scrap. This is quite surprising for many, as the ship, which still meets SOLAS, recently underwent a $ 10 million USD improvement as a hotel and a museum ship. Design

Exterior design

The Vistafjord is built with a very traditional marine ship profile, with a funnel placed in the middle and an important sheer in its keel. Superstructure well in front and back of the ship. In two repetitions during his career, the additional structure of the Cunard Line is added to the back and top of the superstructure.

In the Norwegian America Line service, Vistafjord carries a traditional NAL livery, with a gray stomach, a white superstructure, a yellow pole and a yellow funnel with red, white and blue lines (Norwegian flag colors). After the sale to Cunard he retains the gray color, but his mouthpiece is painted in red/black Cunard color and the pole is white. The red "Cunard" text is then added to the superstructure. Coinciding with the change of name to Caronia in 1999 the hull of the ship was painted black. Like the Ruby Saga the stomach is painted dark blue and its yellow funnel, with a dark blue top and a narrow white line separating the two colors.

Generator

Ruby Saga has 1 emergency genset and 7 main power generators.
Emergency generator is Caterpillar SR4 which produces 275 kW at 440 V.
The main generator consisting of 6 Bergen RSGB-8 produces a maximum of 690 kW each and 1 Cummins KTA 3067-G produces a maximum of 750 kW. Maximum safe working load is 550 kW for Bergens, and 400 kW for Cummins; in this it contains a total power of 3700 kW. During cruise ships in Northern waters, the average daily loading is 2,975 kW. The loading of tropical waters from the generator will result in an average fuel consumption of 15.5 tons per day of marine gas oil.

Air Conditioning

Three Carrier 19XL5353306CR (R134a) marine air conditioning units supplying cold water treated to 42 air handling units (AHU). The Carrier units each consume 400 kW (at 100%) of electricity for the motor, which produces 1,734 kW (5,917,000 Btu/h) of cooling from the plant. AHU provides 14.750.000 cuÃƒ, ft/h (418,000 m ³/h) air-conditioned air. It's associated with 8 hourly air changes in the cabin, 15 changes per hour in public spaces, and 60 changes per hour in the kitchen.

The inlet fan of the engine room produces 306,000 m ³/h (10.800.000 cuÃƒ, ft/h) and the exhaust fan removes 50,000 m ³/h ( 1,800,000 cuÃƒ, ft/h). The main engine, generator, and boiler use about 230,000 m ³/h (8,100,000 cuÃƒ,ft/h) of fresh air with full load.

Auxiliary

22 pumps, 11 seawater and 11 fresh water achieve cooling for the above unit.
The 11 seawater consists of 3 for the main engine cooling system, 3 for diesel generators, 4 for air conditioning units, and 1 for Cummins.
11 freshwater consists of 3 for main engine jacket water, 3 for diesel generator, 3 for main engine piston cooling, and 2 for cooling main engine nozzle.

Boiler

Steam is supplied at 9 bar (0.90 MPa; 130 psi) (wet) with total boiler output 19,300 kg/hour (42,500 pounds/hour).
This is provided by:

2 Swirlyflow j.5655/6 oil-fuel-type boiler produces 11,000 kg/hour (24,300 pounds/hour) using an average of 3 tons per day of fuel.
2 main engines Spanner Swirlyflow exhaust gas type J.5657/58 produces 6,200 kg/hour (13,700 pounds/hour).

Steam is used to heat the fuel to the appropriate injection temperature, for re-heat AC, and for domestic hot water. Two domestic water heaters are retrofit and Laval Alpha Type M10-BFG Heaters.

Cooling

The plant is retrofit with the new R-404a gas. It has two sides - high temperature (plus box) and low temperature system (minus box). The plus system has a 35 kW (119,000 Btu/j) cooling capacity, and the minus system has a cooling capacity of 41 kW (140,000 Btu/j).
There are 20 ice machines on board, capable of producing 9,450 pounds (4,290 kg) per day. There are also 471-sized cabin 2,8-or -4-cubic-feet (79 or 113Ãƒ, L) of refrigerators in cabin, 347 in passenger cabin.

Stabilizer

Denny Brown AEG unit which has the title "Swan Hunter Ship 39 Contract". They take a full load current of 26 kW per main motor, and have a fin length of 15 feet (4.6 m), and a width of 7 feet (2.1 m).

Water production factory

Three water production plants on board capable of producing 627 tons per day. They are as follows:

Atlas-Danmark Refiner AFGU 2SN091 which is a 200 ton per day unit.
Reverse Osmosis 66K SWRO Silver-D matrix which is a 250 ton per day unit.
Reverse Osmosis 44K SWRO Silver D matrix produces 120 tons per day.

Steering gear

Steering Gear manufactured by AEG is a RDC 630/100 propeller type with Vickers VSG Mark III Standard Pump. It also has an unusual emergency steering pump, which is driven by a pneumatic motor.
