Plot summary
Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) woke up in the hospital after a seizure, now realizing the event of My Struggle II is a vision and has not really happened yet. Mulder initially thought Scully's chat was a product of his illness but left the hospital to investigate. Agent Jeffrey Spender then appears beside Scully's bed, revealing that someone was looking for William. He first refused to tell him the location of his son, only revealing the name of the adopting family - Van De Kamp. Mulder follows a henchman who he believes will take him to The Smoking Man, but he arrives elsewhere with a mysterious conspirator; Mr. Y (A.C. Peterson) and Erika Price (Barbara Hershey). They tried to negotiate with Mulder to surrender his son but Mulder refused. Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) tried to meet Scully, but could not find him. When he goes to his car, he meets inside by The Smoking Man and Reyes. Meanwhile, Scully tries to leave the hospital but his spasms again cause him to crash his car. He was rescued by Agent Einstein and Agent Miller, and was accepted back to the hospital. Both agents left the room. A killer sent by Mr. Y and Erika enter and try to strangle Scully, but Mulder enters and rescues him by slicing the killer's neck. When Skinner came in, Mulder confronted him because he smelled like smoke. In flashbacks when Skinner was in the car with the Smoking Men, the latter revealed (in a further flashback for 17 years, "En Ami") that he , not Mulder, Scully artificial impregnated.
Scully opens his eyes in the dark, lying on his side on the bed in a mysterious house. He explored the mysterious house and ended up in an endless pattern in the same room. Mulder theorizes that the experience is a kind of sleep paralysis. He returns to his memory of his sleeping paralysis, where he picks up a snowball with a boat model inside. Mulder and Scully arrive at the dock, meeting Detective Costa (Louis Ferreira). Then, Scully's attention was drawn to a man who was watching them seriously from one of the portable sidewalks. Costa told them the victim asked if they had found Ghouli. When Scully turns to check if a mysterious man is there, he leaves. Both agents investigated two teenagers about the cuts. Both went on about their experience and their girlfriend, Jackson Van De Kamp. The agents arrived at Van De Kamp's household, the same house Scully saw in his dream. Two shots were heard with a third voice coming from upstairs. Scully goes up and finds the bloody corpse of Jackson Van De Kamp. As they left the room and the door clicked closed, the zipper opened slowly. Jackson sat down and left the room. Mulder meets Skinner at Chimera, telling him to cancel the investigation. Mulder insists that Jackson's DNA matches Scully's. At the hospital, Jackson explains to Brianna that he has been hiding because there are people who are after him. He reveals that Ghouli is not there and that's just something he "made". Jackson escaped from hospital after the death of a DOD member. The next day, Scully found a gas station in the countryside that had a windmill outside. Scully meets Peter Wong with Wong mentioning that he hopes he can get to know him better. The agents asked to see the cassette recordings. In the recording, Scully was having a conversation with William. She smiles as Mulder holds her while they see their son, alive. During this season, they searched for William. In the third episode of "Plus One", Scully and Mulder return intimate. At the end of season 11, "My IV struggle", he revealed to Mulder that he was pregnant with his son. Also at the end of the story, Smoking Men shoot William, who makes himself look like Mulder.
