Notaro was born in Jackson, Mississippi. His mother was born in New Orleans. Notaro grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi, until the nursery. Notaro moved to Denver, Colorado, where he was involved in the music industry. He became a band manager, working under the name Tignation Promotions in the mid-90s.
Notaro's works promoting the band took him to Los Angeles, where he tried to stand for the first time in the late 90s. Notaro has since appeared on Comedy Central Presents and at The Sarah Silverman Program as a lesbian police officer. He often collaborated with coauthor Kyle Dunnigan. With Dunnigan and David Huntsberger, he hosted the Professor Blastoff podcast from May 2011 to July 2015.
In 2011, she released her debut album, Good One . Her 2012 sophomore album, Live , is a recording of a stand-up set that was made shortly after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

In November 2015, Notaro co-wrote, produced, and starred in a semi-autobiographical TV pilot for Amazon Video called One Mississippi . The show received a series of six-episode series from Amazon a month later. The show follows Notaro's character when he returns to his hometown of Bay Saint Lucille, Mississippi, after the unexpected death of his mother.

In his approach to comedy (and if he considers himself a dark comic): "I will always do whatever I think is the funniest, if there is something dark, I will do it If it's a sock doll, if it's a bench I'll do it. Personal life
Notaro sometimes discusses his romantic relationship in the action but strives to maintain a level of privacy. Notaro met his wife, Stephanie Allynne, on the set of the movie In The World... They got engaged on January 1, 2015, and got married on October 24, 2015. They welcomed twins, Max and Finn, on June 26 2016, conceived using Allynne eggs via a substitute.
Notaro plays guitar and drums and says he is an avid music fan who was in the band when he was younger. "Tig" is a childhood nickname given to him by his older brother when he was two years old.
Cancer
Notaro was diagnosed with cancer in both breasts on July 30, 2012. On August 3, he discussed his recent cancer diagnosis and other personal problems during a live stage show at Largo in Los Angeles. This set has been described as "instantly legendary," with many comedians praising his work.
The next day, comedian Louis C.K. called Notaro, told him that he wanted to release the event audio. He was uncomfortable with the idea at first but decided that the material could help people, so he agreed. C.K. made audio from the performance available in October for download on its site under the title Live . Notaro then releases audio (with booklet) in iTunes. Live ended up selling more copies than Kiss Monster album, which debuted in the same week, something Notaro said he never dreamed could happen. He is a fan of the band in his youth.
Notaro then undergoes a double mastectomy without reconstructive surgery. Notaro opted out of chemotherapy but decided to continue treatment with hormone blocking. After the show in Philadelphia, Notaro was hospitalized and had to undergo surgery to get the cyst.
