A calcaneal spur (or heel spur ) is the bone growth of the calcaneal tuberosity (heel bone). Calcaneal spurs are usually detected by radiographic examination (commonly referred to as "x-rays"). This is a form of eksostosis.

When the leg is exposed to constant stress, calcium deposits accumulate in the lower part of the heel bone. Generally, this has no effect on one's daily life. However, repeated damage can cause these deposits to accumulate with each other, causing a pacemaker deformity, called a calcaneal spur (or heel).

An inferior calcaneal spur lies in the inferior aspect of the calcaneus and is usually a response to plantar fasciitis during the period, but may also be associated with ankylosing spondylitis (usually in children). A stimulating posterior calcaneal develops on the back of the heel at the insertion of the Achilles tendon.

The inferior calcaneal drive consists of calcaneus calcification, which is superior to the plantar fascia in plantar fascia insertion. Posterior calcaneal boosts are often large and palpable through the skin and may need to be removed as part of the treatment of insertive Achilles tendonitis.

Signs and symptoms

The main symptom consists of pain in the area around the spur, which usually increases the intensity after a long rest period. Patients may report heel pain becomes more severe when waking up in the morning. The patient may not be able to withstand the burden on the heel that hurts comfortably. Running, walking, or lifting heavy loads can exacerbate the problem.

Cause

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of calcaneal spurs. Citing the opinion of Edward Kwame Agyekum, "When stress is placed on the plantar fascial ligament, it not only causes plantar fasciitis, but causes the heel... where the plantar fascia is attached to the heel bone.Generally, the calcaneus spurs to develop when proper treatment is not given to the foot and heels. People who are obese, have flat feet, or who often wear high heels most vulnerable to the heel spurs.

Treatment

It is often seen as a recurring stress injury, and thus lifestyle modification is usually the foundation of a management strategy. For example, one should start doing leg and calf exercises. Strong muscles in the calf and lower leg will help relieve stress from the bones and thus help heal or prevent the heel spurs. Icing area is an effective way to relieve pain immediately.
