The band consists of five members: lead vocalist Chris Barnes, guitarist Ray Suhy and Jack Owen, bassist Jeff Hughell and drummer Marco Pitruzzella. Originally a side project formed by Barnes with guitarist Allen West of Obituary, but became a full-time commitment after Barnes was dismissed from Cannibal Corpse in 1995. They have released twelve albums, and are listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fourth best-selling acting death metal in the US, with album sales of over 370,000 (sales figures taken from 2003).

Histori

Formasi

, Berhantu , dan Warpath (1993-1997)

After Barnes and West join, they recruit Terry Butler, who knows the West from his involvement with Massacre, and Greg Gall, brother-in-law Terry Butler. The first Six Feet Under was played in 1993 at the club, performing mostly cover songs. The band began writing original material in mid-1994. Because Barnes has signed a contract with Metal Blade Records with Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under signed to this label.

Their first album, Haunted , was released on September 1, 1995. Haunted was produced by Brian Slagel (who found Slayer) and Scott Burns (record producer) (who found Sepultura and worked with Napalm Death, and Deicide, among others). At this point Chris Barnes has made Six Feet Under his top priority. In 1996, in the recording of Vile's album, he parted ways with Cannibal Corpse.

The next release of the Six Feet Under is EP's Alive and Dead EP on October 29, 1996. A double album/live EP, containing three studio recordings ("Insect", "Drowning" and Judas Priest cover, "Grinder" ) and four songs from Haunted displayed live. The band released their second studio album, Warpath , on September 9, 1997.

Maximum Violence and Tomb Classic (1998-2000)

In 1998, Allen West went to rejoin the Obituary and was replaced by Steve Swanson. This was the band's only line-up change until January 2011. Combined with Barnes's departure from Cannibal Corpse, Swanson's arrival helped turn the Six Feet Under from a side project into a band in its own right.

July 13, 1999, saw the release of her third studio album Six Feet Under, Maximum Violence . As indicated by the album name, the lyrics on this release are much louder than previous releases. The band also recorded a death-metal retooling of the Kiss "War Machine" song.

Maximum Hardness has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide, a temporary unattainable status for death metal bands during the late '90s when death metal declined in popularity. This caused some unexpected promotional events for the band. During the summer of 2000, Six Feet Under participated in the Vans Warped Tour, a festival that, at the time, usually featured punk rock bands.

Furthermore pursuing their interest in cover songs, Six Feet Under released their full album from the cover, , on October 24, 2000. The songs were given death metal makeovers in terms of vocal timbre and instruments, but the original riff and rhythm of the songs are left intact. The songs include "Sweet Leaf" from Black Sabbath, "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze".

True Carnage and Carrier Blood (2001-2003)

The group's fourth studio album, True Carnage (7 August 2001), was also their first recording to feature guest artists: Ice-T raps while Barnes roars "One Bullet Left", and Karyn Crisis joins Barnes for " Sick and Twisted ". Song writing on True Carnage is more plane oriented than the previous songs. Tracks are still crashing and most are slow, but not static. Musical skills are also enhanced, and production complements brutality. True Carnage peaked on the Billboard Heatseeker charts at number 18.

Six Feet Under made a long journey from an American tour, starting in the summer of 2002, with supporters of Skinless and Sworn Enemy. Their June 14th appearance was recorded for DVD and the release of a live album, Double Dead Redux . September 2002 saw a band tour with Hatebreed. Around Christmas 2002, they participated in several European festivals with bands such as Kataklysm and Dying Fetus.

The next band released Blood Carrier , on September 23, 2003. The settings on this album are very dark and murky. In addition to his distinctive guttural vocals, Barnes also began using high pitched squeal pig vocals on this release.

Classical Tomb 2 , 13 , and One Decade at the Cemetery (2004-2006)

Graveyard Classics 2 came out on October 19, 2004. This cover album only focuses on the album AC/DC 1980 Back in Black . Allmusic Investigator Wade Kergan said that death metal-makeover on these ancestral songs "is a threat of the same piece and kitsch... Six Feet Under obviously had an explosion when they tore it."

Six Feet Under released their sixth studio album on March 21, 2005, titled 13 . While writing the lyrics, Chris Barnes reportedly entered a "vision" of smoking large quantities of marijuana and meditating.

Metal Blade Records issued One Decade at the Tomb on October 28, 2005, a set of five disk boxes. The first two discs are the 'best' material, the third is a rare collection, the fourth disc came from one of the band's first concerts in 1995, and the last disc was a live DVD from 2005.

In November 2005, Chris Barnes joined the Finnish death metal band, Torture Killer as the main vocalist for a side project. His new bandmates saw this as a great compliment, which began as a cover band of Six Feet Under and Obituary. Barnes singing vocals on their 2006 studio album Swarm!

Command , Death Rituals and Graveyard Classics 3 (2007-2010)

Six Feet Under toured for the majority of 2006 before hitting the studio to record their next album, Commandment , released on April 17, 2007. The album works in a band formula. According to music critic Chad Bowar, the album has an "interesting death metal song... which is very heavy, but also has a good groove for them."

Six Feet Under plays Metalfest 2007 tour with opener Finntroll, Belphegor, and Nile, the most widely promoted tour to date. A music video for "Doomsday" aired on MTV2's Headbangers Ball, beginning on November 10 that year.

On December 24, 2007, Six Feet Under announced on their website that they would go to the studio in early 2008 to record a new album. The album, titled Death Rituals , was released on Metal Blade Records on November 11, 2008 in the US, and November 17, 2008 in the UK.

As announced on January 31, 2008, Chris Barnes officially parted ways with Torture Killers, to be replaced by Jury Sallinen. Drummer Greg Gall is currently writing and recording material with a new band called Exitsect, along with guitarist Sam Williams (Denial Fiend, Down by Law), bassist Frank Watkins (Obituary, Gorgoroth), guitarist Joe Kiser (Murder-Suicide Pact, Slap Of Reality) and vocalist Paul Pavlovich (AssÃÆ'¼ck).

Graveyard Classics 3 dirilis pada 19 Januari 2010.

Mati , dan Tidak Lahir (2011-2013)

In early 2011, Terry Butler went to join fellow members of the obituary death metal band. Drummer Greg Gall also left.

In November 2011, Rob Arnold and Matt Devries posted a statement saying they had departed from Chimaira to play in Six Feet Under full-time. However, in 2012, Matt Devries left the band to join the Fear Factory, replacing the old bassist, Byron Stroud. The vacant position was then filled by former Brain Drill 7-string bassist Jeff Hughell.

The band's ninth studio album Undead was released on May 22, 2012. It was also announced on the same day that Rob Arnold will be replaced by Swedish guitarist Ola Englund of Feared and Scarpoint bands. The band says that Rob will remain a major writing partner and collaborator for future Six Feet Under releases.

The band released their tenth album Unborn on March 19, 2013.

According to a recent interview on March 21, 2013, Barnes has written material for the next album.

Crypt of the Devil dan Graveyard Classics IV: The Number of the Priest (2014-2016)

On May 5, 2015, Six Feet Under released their eleventh studio album, Crypt of the Devil . In this release Chris Barnes combines Phil Hall, Josh Hall and Brandon Ellis from Cannabis Corpse band to line up in the studio.

In April 2015, Jeff Hughell had to step out of the Hatefest tour in Europe and Victor Brandt of Entombed had to fill in as a temporary bassist.

The band released their fourth cover album Graveyard Classics IV: The Number of the Priest on May 27, 2016 with Ray Suhy on guitar and bass and Josh Hall on drums, both from Cannabis Corpse, appearing on the album.

In 2016 veteran guitarist Steve Swanson left the band and was replaced by Cannabis Corpse member Ray Suhy.

Torture (2017-present)

On January 10, 2017, the band announced their twelfth album, Torment , released by Metal Blade Records on February 24th. The album marked the debut of drummer Marco Pitruzzella with the addition of Jeff Hughell who recorded the guitar and bass for the album. On February 28, former guitarist Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, Jack Owen joined the band.

Music styles

Chris formed the Six Feet Under with the intention of writing death metal that was not just about the beats and the speed of the explosion. They play a more death-oriented style of play, perform slower, or more mid-tempo songs than most death metal acts. Barnes's lyrical style has changed little since his departure from Cannibal Corpse, though the lyrical content is not as shocking as his first band. Today, Chris writes about violence, thick blood and death, with several political trends, such as the legality of marijuana and criticism of the government.
