van conversion is a full-sized cargo van sent to a third-party company to be equipped with a variety of luxuries for onshore and camping trips. It could also mean a full-sized passenger van where the back seat has been rearranged for taxis, school buses, shuttle buses, and a limo destination as a family van replacement. Other conversions include a bespoke fitting service that must be made to create a light commercial vehicle loading area suitable for industrial work. These include things like racking systems for storage of tools and goods so they can stay safe and take advantage of the full storage capabilities of the vehicle.

Histori

Car van conversion became a force during the 1970s and 1980s. The initial conversion is just a van with a seat placed inside it, often with a mural drawn along the sides.

After the mid-80s, luxurious interiors featuring thickly layered chairs, wood trims and fancy lighting began to appear in the convertible vans as families and pensioners began to use them for road trips and camping. At the same time, both the federal government and the vehicle manufacturers began to control the van conversion industry, demanding that certain safety guidelines be followed. The price of conversion vans also began to increase as things like sleeping accommodations, cooking utilities, televisions and other items were added to the conversion van. The higher the price and the smaller market segments mean a decrease in sales. Also, DVD and flat screen technology means many cars now have features that are only exclusive to van conversions. At the same time, gas prices are also rising, causing more people to move away from this large cargo van, whose poor V-8 and aerodynamic engines produce poor gas mileage. Finally, increased demand for minivans and SUVs attracted more potential customers. Despite these setbacks, as the economy surged in the 1990s, van conversion sales began to improve, with nearly 200,000 units sold in 1994 alone. In 2007, about 20,000 convertible cars were sold each year, with most being sold for family transportation.

Top Type

The most fundamental difference in van conversion is the "top" type.

Low Boss - Low top vans retain the factory roof in the van. This van is more aerodynamic, but has less interior space. During the 80s, this van became less common as TV, VCR, and video games became very popular too. With the development of integrated DVDs and flat screen monitors, these vans are quite recovered, but they continue to run a second van that is far above it.

High Peak - This van has a section of the original factory roof that is cut and fiberglass "high roof" or "roof deer" or "high roof" is added. This has been a signature feature of the conversion van. The tall top allows the occupants to stand in the van without bending over. For structural purposes, the roof is often left in front and rear of the van. Modern vans, which have heavier frames, use fewer roofs than older vans. The front and back often have lights, storage racks, stereo components, and, on older models, TVs and VCRs, many of which sit on the original roof. The high peak is the signature inclusion on the defective van because the inhabitants of the wheelchair can be lifted into the van without bending down. It has also become a necessity in campervans. The high top also allows much larger storage. Also, the early TV and VCRs can be mounted on the ceiling, so they do not inhibit movement and leg space in the van. The first high peak starts no higher than the factory roof, then lifted from the driver's seat with two skylights installed in this section, usually flanking the TV antenna. This soon failed because it leaked and lightly hit the occupants. The high peaks begin to rise with a soft angle with the steep center of the spine. The center of the antenna is mounted internally and allows for larger 13 "TVs.With the advent of flat panel TVs and small DVD players replacing the VCR, the need for high peaks has been reduced. However, the increase in space is highly desired by customers, especially since the convertible vans have moved into the direction of the luxury end of the automotive spectrum, and the majority of convertible vans are still produced with high peaks.

Conversion type

There are different conversion types besides the usual van-like passenger conversion:

1. Van Travel / Family Van - This is a standard conversion van and the only one offered with low tops and high tops. A typical travel van will accommodate seven passengers in a back seat, and four captain seats. Often, the backseat electronically folds into the bed. These vans usually have large windows with shades, storage cabinets, and TVs. Initially, TV is a small DC conversion model with antenna. These TVs are great (especially in the low peak where they have to be mounted on the floor) and are not very useful because of bad signal. In the 80s, VCRs and DVD players later added greatly increased the usability of the TV. Finally, flat screen monitors have eliminated the need for special cabinets to hold the TV. High-end stereo systems and other electronics have become distinctive. Most accommodate some game systems.

2. Disability Vans / Wheelchair Wheelchair - Van has one or all of the following structural modifications that allow a person in a wheelchair to use a van: an elevated roof to allow cleaning through a door , lifting the roof to allow sufficient head cleaning, lowering or dropping the floor to allow adequate head cleaning. This change is necessary because a person sitting in a wheelchair almost always sits taller than the person sitting in the OEM van seat. In all cases, the platform lift is added to the rear door or passenger side door to allow the person using the wheelchair to enter/exit the van. Modified flooring can be done only in the cargo area to save money while the floor is lowered entirely is the floor where the cargo area and the driver/passenger is lowered. Standard-derived floor conversions are 6 "and 9".

3. Office Vans - This van is built like a small office in the back, with tables and chairs bolted to the floor, electrical outlets in the office area (for computers, etc.), and usually one or two seats behind for passengers. It's most popular for mobile traders and TV camera crews.

4. Motorhomes "Class B" campervan is built on full size cargo vans and is sometimes extended several meters. Lengths range from 17-20 feet. The "Class C" mini-motor has a rear portion actually pulled from the van (known as cutaway), and replaced with a larger rear that offers more space than Class B. The length ranges from 18-30 feet. These vans have more features that allow camping, such as toilets, refrigerators, microwaves, sinks, side sofas, canvas popups that allow standing, and sometimes stoves.

5. Shuttle Van - Shuttle van is very similar to traveling van, but with different purpose and with different seat configuration. When traveling vans are used by families, shuttle vans are usually used by businesses. These vans are traditionally used for taxis, school buses, limousines, airport buses, and for law enforcement.

6. Commercial Vans - Commercial Vans has a specially built interior equipped with shelves to meet customer storage requirements to improve efficiency and utilize dead spaces. Other work is also taken on the vehicle to make it as easy as possible, including lighting, electric power systems, ventilation, heating and livery companies.

Vans used in conversion

Current

The convertible van was initially naked, with no full-sized windows of 1 ton or 3/4 tonne cargo vans such as the Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the ProMaster Van Ram, and the full-size Ford Transit. Recently, Ford Transit Connect has been the subject of conversion. The microvan offers vehicles with improved gas mileage and marks the first time since the company stopped the conversion of Chrysler minivans that car-based cars have been used in the conversion. The Van Conversion Marketing Association (CVMA) is a partnership between General Motors and seven convertible van manufacturers. An exclusive partnership means that CVMA members are the only manufacturers authorized by GM to build Chevrolet or GMC conversion vans, but the group is dissolved by the end of 2016. The market for conversion products continues to consolidate.

Former

Vans used for conversion in the past that are no longer produced are Chevrolet Van/GMC Vandura (1970-1996), Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari (1985-2005), Dodge Ram Van (1981-2003), Chrysler minivan, Ford E- Series (1961-2014 in North America) and Volkswagen Eurovan (1992-2003).
