Minimal Shoes are shoes that are meant to be close to walking or strict walking conditions compared to traditional shoes. They have reduced bearings, thinner soles, and lighter weight than other running shoes, allowing for more sensory contacts to the feet on the ground while simultaneously giving the feet with some protection from dangers and soil conditions (such as gravel and dirt). Research shows that wearing minimalist shoes can help improve leg strength and arch function.

Type

Generally, there are two types of minimalist shoes:

  • Barefoot Running Shoes is characterized by zero falling from heel to toe, no arch support, minimal bearing on the heel, and a very thin sol about 3-10mm. Also, the toe box is much wider to provide more space to the toes, where they slightly resemble the shape of a duck's foot, when viewed from above and compared to traditional shoes. Some product lines fall into this category. Examples include Vibram FiveFingers and Merrell Glove, which use outsole produced by Vibram, or Xero Prio.
  • Minimalist Running Shoes are traditional running shoes and barefoot running shoes. They have a heel-to-toe decrease of about 4-8 mm, reduce the bearing and reduce or no support arch. Boxes are usually between barefoot shoes and traditional running shoes.

In recognition of the runaway motion of barefoot footwear, large companies are also beginning to produce targeted shoes in this customer segment. However, these shoes usually do not meet the requirements of minimal shoes or barefoot shoes. Examples include:

  • Nike Free, which has a 17 mm heel and is marketed as minimalist running shoes, although this title is disputed by several people.
  • Adidas Adizero Line, which has a heel to 4 to 10 mm heel drop, a total heel height of up to 30mm and a relatively traditional narrow foot box.
  • The Champion Alpha.

Unlike barefoot shoes and minimal , one of the repeatedly used marketing terms for this product segment is natural walking .
